What’s most important is does Jeffrey Nicholson photgraph people like you ie. similar skin tone, hair color, eye color, ethnicity, age range, physical structure, etc. well? If not, look elsewhere! Just because he was great for someone else, doesn’t mean that he’s great for you.

You should go to http://reproductions.com and look for photographers that photograph people like you well. Choose your top 5 and meet with all of them to get their philosophies and personality. You want to make sure that they’re someone you want to work with.

Here are some other headshot tips:
-COLOR IS STANDARD!Black and white is OUTDATED. If you go to major markets like LA or NY with B/W headshots, you’ll get laughed out. They will think you’re lazy because you’re not up to date.

-For commercial headshots, they want to see your smile and brighter colors. For theatrical (film/tv) they want a more serious/intense look and muted colors.

-It’s important that your head and upper torso is clear so agents and casting directors can fairly judge you physically.

-8X10 is standard size. Anything bigger or smaller will be filed in the circular file cabinet(garbage can).

-You should ONLY have your name printed on the front below your photo. Left, center, or right is subjective.

-NEVER print your agency logo on the headshot UNLESS your agency is paying for it. What if you leave or the agency goes under and you printed a bunch with an agency logo? MONEY DOWN THE DRAIN!

-NOTHING should be printed on the back. You should have your resume (that has your email and CELL phone number printed on it) neatly cut to fit your 8X10 headshot and stapled to the back.

-Have either a white or black border surround your photo. The full bleed (no border) is outdated and tacky.

-NO GLOSSY. Get matte finish (non glossy). Glossy photos can get easily ruined by UV lights and can be difficult for someone to see when florescent lights reflect off of it.

-It MUST be professionally done! For each cheap actor there is, there are 100 serious actors investing in professional photos.

-With regards to looks, you DON’T want character shots ie. literally dressing like a cop, doctor, etc. NO PROPS EITHER! This is an insult to the casting directors and will get you laughed out of this business. You want 3-4 GENERAL LOOKS! For example, a business suit look can suggest FBI, detective, secretary, business person,etc. A casual look (jeans and t-shirt) can suggest high school, college, blue collar. An upscale j-crew/Banana Republic look can suggest young parent, preppy, white collar, etc.

Tell your photographer to avoid:
-Landscape cropping. When a landscape photo is posted online on LA Casting or Actors access, it’s appears very tiny compared to a photo that was cropped portrait. CDs get submissions as really tiny thumbnails. They might miss your photo if it’s smaller than the majority of photos that are cropped portrait.

-Chopping off the top of the head. When too much of your head is chopped off, it makes it a little difficult as to what your really look like. Cropping off a small part of the top of your head is forgivable, but not to the extent where you look like Hannibal Lecter or Sylar from Heroes’ victims.

-Too close. Don’t get it cropped too close to where people can’t see your body. At least your upper torso should be visible in your shots so CDs/Agents have a fair idea of what you look like physically.

-Silly poses. Headshots are supposed to be as natural as rain. Making stupid poses will just make you look stupider. Such common poses include, but not limited to:
1. Sitting on the toilet. This is where you’re sitting down but leaning forward.
2. My head is too heavy. Don’t do a headshot where your hand is under your chin or even touching your head.
3. Look at me, I have a sexy back! I’ve seen some headshots where people are in contorted poses, looking over his or her shoulder. It’s not natural.
4. I’m a mermaid! This is where you’re laying on your stomach with your feet up.

I don’t know anything about long island, but if you live there..you should know Long Island. If your clients live there or want the shoot there. Ask them if they have a location in mind. If they don’t, then it’s your job as a photographer to find a place.

Google parks in long island.

Drive around the area, until you find what looks to be a nice grassy area, maybe it has trees, maybe it’s by a lake etc.. It doesn’t has to be a actual park. You can use any setting, (as long as it’s nice for the photo).

In point and shoots, your options are limited.

For a good zoom try the Canon A720 IS.

For good low-light performance, try a Fujfilm F50fd.

However, you can’t quite get both in a point and shoot; you’d have to go to an SLR. For a concert, the A720 IS might do okay because it’s image stabilized and if the stage is well-lit. If the spot lights aren’t that strong on the performers, the F50fd will do better, with less noisy images.

How much are you willing to spend on it? Are you wanting it to be small?

I have the Nikon Coolpix s600. I love it. When I bought it, Circuit City said it was a 5 star camera and they have never had any returns on it. I really do recommend it.

It is a bit pricey though. I spent 230 bucks on it after tax and buying a 14 dollar memory card. Here’s a picture:

Now, the Nikon Coolpix s550 is a step down from the s600, but more affordable. The Coolpix series is very compact and stylish while not taking away from the quality of the pictures. Here is the s550.

I definitely recommend the Nikon Coolpix series, except I don’t like the ones that are a step down from the s550. My sister has the s210, and the pictures are very orange..

Canons are very high quality cameras as well. They are pretty pricey, but they are definitely worth your money.

Honestly, I wouldn’t recommend a Sony. My other sister had quite a few different Sony cameras, and both had their problems. She had a compact Sony Cybershot, it broke. Now she has a bigger Sony camera, I’m not sure the exact model, but the pictures come out blurry and orange. She hates it.

It’s hard to recommend a camera without knowing your budget, or what style you are looking for. Good luck choosing a camera for your boyfriend. [:

In short, yes, my wife and I had reportage style photos taken at our weding, although the whole album was not of this style.

We opted for a photogpaher who could provide a nice combo of formal, candid and reportage photos in order to achieve a good balance to the album. That said, reportage is a style where you can get away with having the whole album that style should you choose.

In terms of times when relaxed images may not suit, the most obvious answer is when it comes to shots that other family members may want to hang on their wall or place in a photo frame on their mantelpiece. Whilst my wife and I have a lovely shot of us kissing on a bridge in black and white on the wall in our house (taken reportage style), both our sets of parents have ones of us standing alongside them (taken formal style). You will tend to find that ‘older folk’ prefer the more traditional style.

Before making the final decision on what style to go for and who to use, I would suggest doing a lot of shopping around and a fair bit of research – you will find that whilst some photogrpahers claim they can shoot ‘reportage style’ not all will be of the same standard. I have attached a link to a site that tells you what to look out for when choosing a wedding photographer and it may well be worth checking out prior to making the final decision.

By the way, just to make you feel better, you might want to check how I’ve spelt wedding in the first paragraph!
