I want to become a photographer working for myself doing portraits, What is the best thing to do?
Im thinking of taking up a level one course in photography, does anyone think its necessary to do a degree after this experience or is better? I want to start do in my spare time, take pictures of friends and family to build an initial portfolio. Has anyone reading this to do it full time and how are you? Ive got an SLR, photoshop, black and white background so portable, would send photos to be printed professionally. I know it is very competitive, wanted to hear ideas from people who have taken this route and how to make the best
People working for profit should qualify for the position. My suggestion is to take a recognized course in photography and have the confidence to charge your client for a professional job. photography and people have all gone. Twenty thirty forty years ago giving an amateur service and pricing was a way to start. Today People are more educated, have their own cameras and have different aspirations for their lives. Most want to be photographed professionally and do not balk not pay. They do not look at portfolios and critical know as much about photography as you. Everybody now has at least two cameras – a mobile phone and a digital camera. Many get their friends to take quick snapshots of themselves and some even make portraits of themselves and are very satisfied. Today if you offer a service and do not deliver your customers can you take to Trading Standards or the Small Claims Court at the very least. Taking money people for services is increasingly difficult because of public education and measures to prevent the consumer societies of being attacked for their money. Do not be shortsighted. Every day, from now to pay people for photographs may mean you have license, as drivers taxi, doctors, nurses, beauticians, hairdressers and teachers.
