When I told my gf I wanted to enter the photograph of my trips, she bought me a Canon Rebel XSi .. now?
I do just read the manual and plunge in and have fun 
You posted on a little earlier than you get a Nikon D90 – do you! Yup! RTM and play with the controls. The sooner you learn about the basics of photography (exposure and composition) and learn more about the relationship between shutter speed, ISO and aperture settings you can get auto-play with the manual. Starting with Auto is fine until you get the feel your camera, but get the manual when you can – do not let the camera decide, because it bases its decisions on software written some years ago by a guy who thinks in Japan, he knows what your photos should come out like (well, maybe not quite like that, but you get the idea no?). You must be the one who has creative control over your images – and you do that in the manual mode.
