Tips for taking pictures of paintings?

I need to shoot pictures for the portfolio and I need to do soon. I recently bought a Nikon D40x SLR kit Black 10.2 MP Digital Camera w / 18-55mm, but know very little about photography and while I 'm ready to learn, it is a bit confusing. Would the auto take on this? Also, how about lighting? I've seen people do the Light umbrella on one thing and it bounces away from him on the subject. Not having the proper materials and broke the camera was the last thing I purchased on a credit card 12 months no need to pay, would be using a bright light and an umbrella to provide a real similar effect?

You'll need two fires set at 45 degrees on either side of the painting.
